Japan to Myanmar visa requirements

Japanese ordinary passport holders can get a Tourist Visa on Arrival (VOA) in Myanmar for a 30-day single-entry stay, USD 50, at Yangon, Mandalay, or Naypyidaw international airports. This trial scheme began 21 October 2024 and was officially extended through October 2026. An online tourist eVisa (USD 50, 28-day stay) is also available as an alternative and is useful for land borders or to pre-arrange entry. As of mid-2026, Japan is NOT visa-free for Myanmar. The earlier 2018-2020 visa exemption was cancelled. Instead, Myanmar runs a Tourist Visa on Arrival (VOA) pilot for Japanese, South Korean, and Macao ordinary passport holders that started 21 October 2024 for a one-year trial; on 28 October 2025 Myanmar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs formally extended it for another year (through approximately October 2026). The VOA is issued only at the three international airports (Yangon, Mandalay, Nay Pyi Taw), costs USD 50 paid in cash, grants a 30-day single-entry stay for tourism only, and cannot be extended. Travelers should carry exact USD cash (clean/new bills), two passport photos, hotel booking, and a return ticket. Because the scheme is a renewable trial and airline/airport staff may be unfamiliar with it, many travelers prefer the official online Myanmar eVisa (evisa.moip.gov.mm) as a more predictable alternative: USD 50, 28-day stay, single entry, valid 90 days from issue, with the approval letter printed before departure. The eVisa is also the route for land-border entry, where VOA is not offered. Myanmar is not in the Schengen area, so the Schengen 90/180 rule and ETIAS do not apply.
