Do Japan passport holders need a visa to visit Vietnam?
Visa-free up to 45 days under Vietnam's unilateral exemption (extended through 14 March 2028). Japanese ordinary passport holders enter Vietnam visa-free for up to 45 days per entry under Vietnam's unilateral visa exemption policy. The policy was extended on 15 March 2025 for another three years, covering Japan along with 11 other priority markets, and is valid through 14 March 2028. The 45-day stay is per entry — there is no required minimum gap between visits, but officers will scrutinise back-to-back entries that look like de facto residence. The exemption covers tourism, business meetings, family visits, and transit. For stays beyond 45 days, the Vietnam e-Visa (USD 25 single-entry, USD 50 multi-entry; valid 90 days) is the simplest alternative, available entirely online. Work, study, and long-term assignments require an embassy-issued visa or a permit arranged by the employer. The Vietnam Electronic Arrival platform is in pilot but not yet mandatory; immigration is still paper-stamp.
