Q: How is the 90-day limit calculated?

It is a rolling 90 days within any 180-day window, counted across ALL Schengen countries combined, not per country. Days spent in Italy, Austria, France, etc., all count.

Q: Is ETIAS required to enter Slovenia now?

Not as of June 21, 2026. ETIAS is scheduled to launch in the last quarter of 2026. Until then, no travel authorization is needed; afterward, US citizens will need an ETIAS (EUR 20) once the launch rules make it mandatory.

Q: What is the EES and do I need to do anything?

The Entry/Exit System is the EU's biometric border registration. It is fully operational, so your passport details, fingerprints, and facial image are recorded at the Schengen external border. No advance action or fee is needed.

Q: How much passport validity do I need?

At least three months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area, though six months is recommended. You also need a blank page for entry.

Q: What if I want to stay longer than 90 days?

You must apply for a Slovenian national long-stay (Type D) visa or residence permit through Slovenian authorities before traveling; the visa-free rule only covers short stays.

US ordinary passport holders do NOT need a visa for tourist visits to Slovenia of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Slovenia is a Schengen member, so the 90/180 rule applies across the whole Schengen Area, not Slovenia alone. As of June 21, 2026, no visa or advance travel authorization is required; ETIAS is not yet in operation. Slovenia is part of the Schengen Area, and US citizens are visa-exempt for short stays. A US ordinary passport holder may enter Slovenia for tourism or business and stay up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period without a visa. The 90-day allowance is shared across ALL Schengen countries combined (e.g., Italy, Austria, France, Germany, Slovenia), not counted per country. The passport must be valid for at least three months beyond the planned departure from the Schengen Area (six months recommended) and contain at least one blank page. The EU Entry/Exit System (EES), a biometric border registration scheme, has been fully operational across Schengen external borders since April 10, 2026. How to apply

Confirm your passport validity

Ensure your US ordinary passport is valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area. Six months of validity is strongly recommended to avoid issues. Check for at least one blank page for entry stamps.

Verify your 90/180 Schengen balance

Count any days already spent in ANY Schengen country in the prior 180 days. Slovenia shares the 90-day allowance with all other Schengen states. Use the EU's Schengen calculator if unsure.

Prepare supporting documents

Carry proof of onward/return travel, accommodation booking or host address, and evidence of sufficient funds. Border officers may ask for these even though no visa is needed.
