United States to Netherlands visa requirements

No visa needed. US ordinary passport holders can visit the Netherlands visa-free for tourism for up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the Schengen Area. The Netherlands is part of the Schengen Area, and U.S. citizens holding an ordinary passport enjoy visa-free entry for short stays (tourism, business, family visits) of up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period. This 90-day allowance is shared across all Schengen countries combined, not per country. As of 19 June 2026, ETIAS is not yet required; the official EU portal says ETIAS will start operations in the last quarter of 2026 and cost EUR 20 for most applicants once applications open. The Entry/Exit System (EES) is now operational at external Schengen borders for U.S. short-stay travelers; it is a border registration/check collecting passport data, facial image and fingerprints, not an advance application or fee. The passport must be valid for at least three months beyond the intended date of departure from the Schengen Area and have been issued within the previous 10 years. Travelers should be prepared to show proof of onward/return travel, accommodation, travel insurance and sufficient funds, and may be asked the purpose of their visit by border officers.
