Do United States passport holders need a visa to visit Mexico?

Visa-free up to 180 days, but officers decide the exact stay. FMM permit required. U.S. ordinary passport holders do not need a visa to visit Mexico. Every traveler is issued a Forma Migratoria Múltiple (FMM) — an entry permit valid for up to 180 days. Since 2022 the discretion to grant fewer than 180 days rests with the immigration officer, who can ask for evidence of your plans, accommodation, and funds. Air arrivals at most major airports now use a digital QR code instead of paper. Land arrivals must stop at the INM booth at the border. Passport validity required for at least 6 months from entry. Stays for paid work, study, or residence require a separate visa from a Mexican consulate.

How to apply

/01
Check passport validity
Your U.S. passport must be valid at least 6 months after arrival. A US passport card works only for land or sea entry, not air.
· 6 months· passport card = land/sea only
/02
Pre-fill FMM (optional)
Use inm.gob.mx/fmme to pre-fill the FMM online. For air entry, most major airports now issue a digital QR code on arrival — no paper card.
· online pre-fill· QR code at airport
/03
Be ready to justify your stay
If you want the full 180 days, carry return tickets, accommodation bookings, and funds evidence. Officers can grant 30, 60, 90, or 180 days at their discretion.
· officer discretion
/04
Clear immigration
At CUN, MEX, GDL, SJD, or land borders, present passport and (if asked) FMM details. Land crossings must stop at the INM booth right at the border, even for short trips.
· INM booth at land border
/05
Keep the receipt
Don't lose the FMM (paper or digital). Replacement at INM is around USD 50 and slow. You'll need it for exit.
· FMM = exit doc

by frequency
/01
Less than 180 days granted
Officers regularly grant 30-90 days now. To get the full 180, bring strong evidence of departure and means.
High
/02
Passport expiring soon
Less than 6 months remaining will trigger refusal at the airline gate or border.
Medium
/03
Suspected paid work
Mentioning remote work, paid gigs, or business activity at the booth can downgrade your stay or trigger refusal — use a temporary resident or visitor visa for paid activities.
Medium
/04
Skipped land INM booth
Driving past the INM booth without registering an FMM is a common mistake and creates problems on exit.
