Spain to Germany visa requirements

No visa. As an EU citizen, a Spanish national may enter Germany with a valid Spanish passport or physical DNI. ETIAS, EES and the Schengen 90/180-day limit do not apply, but carry ID because Germany currently has notified temporary land-border checks. Spain and Germany are both EU member states and Schengen countries, so Spanish ordinary passport holders travel to Germany under EU freedom of movement rather than a Schengen visitor visa route. A Spanish citizen may enter Germany with either a valid Spanish passport or a physical Spanish national identity card (DNI); Spain's MAEC says the document should be valid at entry and exit, and that digital DNI, driving licences, health cards, family books and birth certificates are not valid travel documents. Spanish EU citizens do not need a visa, ETIAS authorisation, EES registration, an entry form or a German residence permit to visit. They may stay for up to three months with no conditions beyond holding valid ID, and longer under EU residence rules if working, self-employed, in vocational training, genuinely seeking work, studying, or otherwise self-sufficient with health cover. The Schengen 90/180-day short-stay limit applies to non-EU visitors, not to Spanish EU citizens. Germany has notified temporary controls at its land borders from 16 March 2026 to 15 September 2026, and France has notified controls on all internal borders including Spain and Germany from 1 May 2026 to 31 October 2026, so travellers by land should expect possible ID checks even though no visa is required.
