Do Germany passport holders need a visa to visit LA?

German passport holders need a visa for Laos. The easiest option is the official Lao eVisa, applied for online before travel. A visa on arrival is also available at major airports and land borders. There is no visa-free entry for German citizens. Germany (DE) ordinary passport holders are NOT eligible for visa-free entry to Laos (LA). Laos only waives visas for ASEAN members and a small number of countries with bilateral agreements; Germany is not among them. German tourists have two practical channels: (1) the official Lao eVisa (laoevisa.gov.la), applied for online in advance, which grants a 30-day single-entry stay, is valid for 60 days from issuance of the approval letter, and is processed in about 3 working days; and (2) a visa on arrival (VOA) obtainable at major international airports and designated land/rail borders, also for a 30-day stay. The eVisa is recommended because it removes uncertainty at the border, lets you join the eVisa immigration lane, and provides a clear paper trail. Passports must be valid for at least 6 months (the official portal states more than 180 days from arrival) with at least one blank page. Proof of onward/return travel and accommodation may be requested. The eVisa government fee is USD 50 for most nationalities including Germany, plus a small online service/processing fee; VOA at the border is roughly USD 30-40. Laos is in Southeast Asia and is not part of the Schengen area, so the Schengen 90/180 rule and ETIAS do not apply.

Common refusal reasons

by frequency
/01
Not visa-exempt
Laos waives visas only for ASEAN members and a few bilateral-agreement countries; Germany is not included.
High
/02
Border uncertainty with VOA
VOA fees, accepted currencies and open lanes can vary by checkpoint, so an eVisa avoids surprises.
Medium
/03
Passport validity shortfall
Entry can be refused if the passport has under 6 months validity (portal requires 180+ days).
Medium
/04
Overstaying the 30-day limit
Staying beyond the granted 30 days without extension incurs daily fines on exit.
Medium
/05
Single-entry limitation
Leaving Laos voids the eVisa; travelers doing side-trips to Thailand or Vietnam need a new visa to re-enter.
