Canada to United States visa requirements

Canadian citizens enter visa-free for ordinary tourism or business visits and do not need ESTA. Canadian ordinary passport holders generally travel to the United States for tourism, visits, transit, or temporary business without a nonimmigrant visa and without ESTA. Present a valid Canadian passport when flying; at land and sea borders, CBP also lists WHTI documents such as a NEXUS, SENTRI, or FAST trusted-traveler card, or an Enhanced Driver's License/Enhanced Identification Card where issued. CBP officers at the port of entry decide whether to admit the traveler and set the authorized stay; B-2 visitor admissions with an I-94 are generally for six months unless an exception applies, so travelers should check any passport stamp or electronic I-94/admit-until date rather than assuming a full six months. Paid work, study for credit, immigrating, treaty-investor/trader travel, fiance(e) travel, and other listed special categories require the appropriate U.S. status or visa. Canadian permanent residents who are not Canadian citizens are not covered by the Canadian-citizen exemption and must use ESTA if eligible by nationality or obtain the required visa.

· visitor activities only
/04
Travel and clear CBP

· CBP final decision
/05
Track your authorized stay
Check your passport stamp or electronic I-94/admit-until date if one is issued. B-2 visitor admission is generally six months, but the actual authorized stay is the one CBP records.

/06 — The risks

Common refusal reasons

by frequency
/01
Criminal history (DUI, theft, drugs)
Even old or pardoned Canadian criminal records can lead to refusal. US does not recognize Canadian pardons. Apply for a US entry waiver if affected.
Medium
/02
Past US immigration violations
Overstays, prior deportations, or false statements affect future entries. May trigger 3-year or 10-year bars.
Medium
/03
Wrong purpose of travel
Visa-free visitor admission does not permit U.S. employment, study for credit, permanent residence, treaty-investor/trader travel, or fiance(e) travel. Use the correct U.S. category for those purposes.
Medium
/04
Insufficient ties to Canada
Long stays with no return plan, vague itineraries, or evidence of U.S.-based job hunting can trigger refusal under temporary-intent concerns.
Medium
/05
Not a Canadian citizen
Canadian permanent residents and other residents traveling on non-Canadian passports do not get the Canadian-citizen exemption; they may need ESTA or a visa based on nationality.
Medium
/07 — On arrival

After you land

/01
CBP inspection
A visa lets you request admission. CBP decides the actual period of stay and records it in your I-94.
/02
Customs
Declare food, agricultural items, and cash over USD 10,000. Missing declarations can cause fines or seizure.
/03
Connectivity
Airport SIMs are expensive; eSIMs or prepaid plans bought online often work better for short trips.
