Do Canada passport holders need a visa to visit United States?

Canadian citizens enter visa-free, no ESTA. Just passport and purpose-of-visit at the border. Canadian citizens travel to the United States without a visa, without ESTA, and without I-94 issuance for most B-1/B-2 entries. They simply present a valid Canadian passport (or NEXUS, Trusted Traveler, or Enhanced Driver's Licence at land borders) and answer questions at the CBP inspection. Up to 6 months stay is typical for tourism or business visits. The B-2 visitor visa is only needed for stays longer than 6 months, work, or study. Canadians flying internationally to the US still complete the same arrival declarations as other travelers.

How to apply

/01
Check travel document
By air: valid Canadian passport. By land/sea: passport, NEXUS card, Enhanced Driver's Licence, or Trusted Traveler Card (FAST/SENTRI).
· multiple ID options at land borders
/02
Skip ESTA
ESTA does not apply to Canadian citizens. Do not pay third-party sites claiming Canadians need ESTA — it is a scam.
· no ESTA needed
/03
Plan the trip purpose
Tourism, business meetings, short courses, or family visits are B-1/B-2 activities. Paid work, paid internships, or settlement require the correct visa.
· B-1/B-2 activities only
/04
Travel and clear CBP
By air: present passport at CBP inspection (preclearance at YYZ, YUL, YVR, YYC, YOW). By land: present passport or NEXUS at the border. By sea: present passport on disembarkation.
· preclearance at major Canadian airports
/05
Track your stay
CBP issues a verbal stay limit, usually 6 months. Stays beyond 6 months need a B-2 visa. Track your time carefully to avoid future denials.
· 6-month soft limit

/06 — The risks

Common refusal reasons

by frequency
/01
Criminal history (DUI, theft, drugs)
Even old or pardoned Canadian criminal records can lead to refusal. US does not recognize Canadian pardons. Apply for a US entry waiver if affected.
Medium
/02
Past US immigration violations
Overstays, prior deportations, or false statements affect future entries. May trigger 3-year or 10-year bars.
Medium
/03
Working without authorization
Tourism does not include paid work or paid internships. Carry evidence of remote work being for a Canadian employer only.
Low
/04
Insufficient ties to Canada
Long stays with no return ticket, vague plans, or evidence of US-based job hunting can trigger refusal under intent-to-immigrate concerns.
Medium
/05
Dual nationality with restricted country
Dual Canadian citizens with Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, or North Korea may face extra scrutiny.
Low
/07 — On arrival

After you land

/01
CBP inspection
A visa lets you request admission. CBP decides the actual period of stay and records it in your I-94.
/02
Customs
Declare food, agricultural items, and cash over USD 10,000. Missing declarations can cause fines or seizure.
/03
Connectivity
Airport SIMs are expensive; eSIMs or prepaid plans bought online often work better for short trips.
