🇦🇺AUSTRALIA🇵🇹PORTUGAL (SCHENGEN)AU-PT Do Australia passport holders need a visa to visit Portugal (Schengen)?
Visa-free. Australian ordinary passport holders can visit Portugal (Schengen) for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. No ETIAS is required yet (expected Q4 2026), but EES biometric registration now applies at the border. As of 30 May 2026, Australian ordinary passport holders do not need a visa for short tourist stays in Portugal. Portugal is part of the Schengen Area, and Australia is on the EU's visa-exempt list, so you may stay up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period for tourism, family visits, or business. Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended departure from the Schengen Area and issued within the previous 10 years. Since 12 October 2025, the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) has progressively rolled out and became fully operational on 10 April 2026: on your first entry you register fingerprints and a facial image at a border kiosk or booth, replacing passport stamps. This is automatic at the border and free. ETIAS (a roughly EUR 20 online travel authorisation) is NOT yet required for Australians; it is expected to start in the final quarter of 2026, with a transitional grace period afterwards. Until then, no advance online application is needed. Beware of unofficial websites charging for ETIAS before it launches. The 90-day allowance is cumulative across all Schengen countries, not per country.
