Australia to United Kingdom visa requirements

Australian ordinary passport holders need a UK ETA, not a visitor visa, for short visits. The ETA costs GBP 20 and allows visits of up to 6 months. Australian ordinary passport holders do not need a Standard Visitor visa for ordinary UK tourism, family visits, permitted business visits, or short study of up to 6 months. They do need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling, and Australians have been in the non-European ETA cohort required from 8 January 2025. The ETA costs GBP 20 from 8 April 2026, is linked to the passport used to apply, lasts 2 years or until that passport expires, and allows multiple journeys to the UK, Jersey, Guernsey, and the Isle of Man. GOV.UK says decisions usually arrive within a day, but travellers should allow up to 3 working days and wait for the approval email before travelling. Airside airport transit without passing UK border control is currently exempt from ETA; landside transit through border control requires an ETA. For work, marriage or civil partnership, living in the UK through frequent visits, or stays longer than 6 months, apply for the appropriate UK visa instead.

How to apply

/01
Confirm ETA eligibility
Australian ordinary passport holders are ETA-eligible and generally use an ETA instead of a visitor visa for tourism, family visits, permitted business visits, short study, and landside transit.
· ETA, not visa
/02
Use the passport you will travel with
Apply with the Australian passport you will present at boarding and the UK border. The ETA is electronically linked to that passport.
· Same passport
/03
Apply through GOV.UK or the UK ETA app
Use the official UK ETA app or GOV.UK. You will need your passport, email address, payment method, and a face photo.
· Official channels only
/04
Pay the current fee
Pay GBP 20 per traveller. Other websites may charge more, and applying elsewhere cannot get you a faster decision.
· GBP 20
/05
Wait for approval before travel
Most decisions arrive quickly, usually within a day, but GOV.UK says to allow up to 3 working days. Do not travel until the approval email arrives.
· Allow 3 working days
/06
Prepare for the UK border
Carry evidence you can leave at the end of the visit, support yourself, pay for onward or return travel, and stay within visitor rules. Eligible Australian ePassport holders aged 10+ can normally use eGates.
· Border discretion

/06 — The risks

Common refusal reasons

by frequency
/01
ETA required before travel
Australian ordinary passport holders are ETA-eligible and must have the digital permission before travelling for ordinary short visits.
High
/02
Airside transit exception
You do not currently need an ETA if you transit through a UK airport without passing through border control. If you pass border control, you need an ETA.
Medium
/03
Wrong purpose of travel
ETA covers visitor activities, not working for a UK company, self-employment, settlement, or marriage/civil partnership.
Medium
/04
Past UK refusal, overstay, or criminal record
A previous refusal or criminal record can make an ETA unsuitable; GOV.UK suggests considering a Standard Visitor visa instead.
Medium
/05
Insufficient visitor evidence
UK Border Force can still refuse entry if you cannot show you will leave, can support yourself, or will follow visitor rules.
Low
/06
Wrong passport
The ETA is tied to the passport used to apply. If you renew the passport, apply for a new ETA before travelling.
Low
/07 — On arrival

After you land

/01
Immigration
Keep your passport, visa or exemption proof, return ticket, and accommodation details ready for border inspection.
/02
Customs
Review the destination's customs rules before travel and declare restricted goods or large cash amounts when required.
/03
Connectivity
Check whether airport SIMs, eSIMs, or roaming are the best option for your route before arrival.
