Do Australia passport holders need a visa to visit IR?

Australian passport holders need a visa to enter Iran and must obtain it before travelling. The standard route is an electronic visa (e-visa) applied for via Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs portal (evisa.mfa.ir), then collected at an Iranian embassy or on arrival at an international airport with the printed Grant Notice. Since 2025, Australians (alongside US/UK/Canadian citizens) are subject to restrictions that generally require travel as part of a guided tour booked through a registered Iranian agency. Note: Australia's government advises "Do Not Travel" to Iran. Iran is not a visa-free destination for Australian ordinary passport holders. Australia is not on Iran's short list of visa-exempt countries, so a visa must be arranged before travel. The mainstream method is the official e-visa: applicants complete the online form at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs e-visa portal, receive a reference number, and after approval collect the visa at an Iranian mission abroad or at the visa-on-arrival counter of an Iranian international airport (where the EUR fee is paid via the airport banking terminal). The standard tourist e-visa allows a stay of up to 30 days, extendable inside Iran, valid for 3 months from issuance. Since September 2025, Iran imposed tighter rules on a group of countries including Australia, the US, UK and Canada, requiring travellers to visit as part of a guided tour organised by a registered travel agency and to submit a detailed background "resume file"; an October 2025 update relaxed some itinerary flexibility but kept the pre-arranged registered-tour requirement. Separately and critically, the Australian Government (Smartraveller) has a "Do Not Travel" advisory for Iran due to the volatile security situation, high risk of arbitrary detention (including for dual nationals), suspended embassy operations, and the fact that most Australian travel insurance will not cover Iran. Conservatively classified as e-visa for a short tourist stay, but practical travel is strongly discouraged.

/09 — The questions

Frequently asked

Can Australians get an Iran visa on arrival?
In principle a visa-on-arrival counter exists at Iranian international airports, but Australians should apply online at evisa.mfa.ir at least two days before travel and obtain a Grant Notice first. Since 2025, Australian nationals are also generally required to travel on a pre-arranged registered guided tour, so relying on VOA alone is not advisable.
