🇦🇺AUSTRALIA🇪🇸SPAIN (SCHENGEN)AU-ES Do Australia passport holders need a visa to visit Spain (Schengen)?
Australian passport holders can visit Spain visa-free for tourism for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Spain is in the Schengen Area, so no visa is required for short stays. ETIAS is not yet required as of 30 May 2026 (it launches in Q4 2026 with a transitional grace period). Spain is a member of the Schengen Area, and Australia is a Schengen visa-exempt country. An Australian ordinary passport holder may enter Spain (and the wider Schengen Area) for tourism, business or family visits without a visa for stays of up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period. The 90-day allowance is shared across all 29 Schengen states combined, not per country. Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from Schengen and issued within the previous 10 years. The EU Entry/Exit System (EES), a biometric border-registration system, became fully operational on 10 April 2026 and now records entries and exits at the border; this is automatic and free. The ETIAS travel authorisation (around EUR 20) is expected to launch in the last quarter of 2026, followed by a transitional period during which travel without ETIAS is still permitted. As of 30 May 2026, ETIAS is NOT yet required for Australians; travel remains passport-only. Travellers should monitor official EU updates before departure.
