Do Australia passport holders need a visa to visit AT?
Australian ordinary passport holders do NOT need a visa for tourist stays in Austria of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Austria is in the Schengen Area, so the 90/180 rule applies across all Schengen countries combined. As an Australian citizen with an ordinary passport, you can travel to Austria visa-free for tourism, business or short visits for up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period. Austria is part of the Schengen Area, so this 90-day allowance is shared across all Schengen countries — time spent in Germany, France, Italy and other Schengen states counts toward the same limit. At the border you may be asked to show a passport valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure, proof of sufficient funds, and a return or onward ticket. From the last quarter of 2026, the EU will introduce ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System); Australians will then need to obtain an approved ETIAS authorisation online (around EUR 20) before travel. ETIAS is not yet required as of 30 May 2026 and remains in its pre-launch phase, so for now no pre-travel registration is needed. Do not use third-party sites claiming to process ETIAS — only the official EU portal will be valid once it launches.

For guidance only — visa rules change with little notice. Always confirm directly with the destination's embassy or foreign ministry before booking non-refundable travel. Information here applies to ordinary (non-diplomatic) passports unless noted.
