Yes - South African ordinary passport holders need a visa to visit North Macedonia. You must apply in advance for a short-stay/transit "C" visa, as there is no visa-on-arrival or eVisa for South Africans. South Africa is not on North Macedonia's visa-exempt list, so an ordinary South African passport holder must obtain a short-stay and transit ("C") visa before travelling for tourism. The C visa permits stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period and the consular fee is EUR 60 (EUR 35 for children aged 6-12). North Macedonia is NOT a Schengen member state (it is an EU candidate outside Schengen), so the Schengen 90/180 rule and ETIAS do not apply to entering North Macedonia itself. However, two visa-free shortcuts exist in 2026: a traveller already holding a valid multiple-entry Schengen Type C visa or an EU/Schengen residence permit may enter without a North Macedonian visa for up to 15 days, and - under a temporary decision valid 1 January to 31 December 2026 - a holder of a valid Canada, UK or US visa may likewise enter visa-free for up to 15 days. A plain South African passport with none of these documents still requires a visa. There is no North Macedonian embassy in South Africa; applications are handled by the nearest accredited missions (e.g. Cairo or Doha) or via remote/courier arrangements, and must be lodged in person no earlier than six months and no later than 15 days before travel.
