South African ordinary passport holders need a visa for Guinea-Bissau. The most practical route for a short tourist stay is a visa on arrival at Bissau (Osvaldo Vieira International Airport), paid in cash. A linked online biometric pre-enrollment (RGB Visa eVisa) is also available and recommended to speed up the airport process. Guinea-Bissau is a West African country and is NOT part of the Schengen area, so no Schengen 90/180 rule or ETIAS applies. South Africa is not among the 14 visa-exempt nationalities (mostly ECOWAS members), so a visa is required. Guinea-Bissau grants visa on arrival to nationals of all non-exempt countries at Bissau international airport; this is the standard route used by South African travelers. The fee is paid in cash on arrival (commonly EUR 85, but carry extra as fees vary), in Euros, US Dollars or West African CFA Francs only - no cards. The stamp typically authorizes a short stay (around 45 days, extendable in-country up to 90). The government has rolled out an online biometric visa pre-enrollment system (RGB Visa) that lets travelers register and pay a small online processing fee (about EUR 2.5) before arrival to streamline the airport biometric capture; this is currently issued only at Bissau airport. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is mandatory, the passport must be valid at least 6 months, and immigration officers expect proof of accommodation and onward/return travel. Travelers can alternatively apply in advance at a Guinea-Bissau diplomatic mission (nearest are in Luanda and Abuja, as there is no mission in South Africa). Because there is no embassy in South Africa, the visa on arrival / online pre-enrollment route is the realistic choice for most South African tourists.
