Italian (ordinary passport) tourists can obtain a visa on arrival in Syria, typically valid for a 30-day stay, paid in USD cash at the airport or land border. Note: a "Do Not Travel" advisory applies and conditions change rapidly. Since the change of government in January 2025, Syria offers visa on arrival (VOA) to EU/EFTA nationals, including Italian ordinary passport holders, at Damascus and Aleppo airports and at open land borders (e.g. from Lebanon and Jordan). EU citizens generally receive a 30-day single-entry visa for around USD 75, payable in US dollars cash on arrival. Pre-arrangement through a tour operator is no longer mandatory for most nationalities, though the situation remains fluid: an "eVisa" portal (evisa.sy) has been announced as "coming soon" but is not yet operational, and flights and borders have been disrupted at times during 2026. Italy's Farnesina, the UK, and the US all maintain the highest-level "Do Not Travel" advisory for Syria due to armed conflict, terrorism, and arbitrary detention risk. Anyone with an Israeli stamp or Israeli nationality is refused entry. Travelers should confirm current rules with the nearest Syrian embassy and check Italy's Viaggiare Sicuri before departure.
