No visa. As an EU citizen, an Italian passport holder enjoys full freedom of movement and can travel to Luxembourg for any length of stay using just a valid Italian passport or national ID card. No visa, ETIAS, or 90/180-day limit applies. Both Italy and Luxembourg are members of the European Union and the Schengen Area. Under EU freedom of movement rules (Directive 2004/38/EC), Italian citizens have the right to enter, live, work, and stay in Luxembourg without any visa, residence permit, or time limit. Travel is permitted on either a valid Italian passport or a national identity card, and internal Schengen borders normally have no routine passport checks (though spot identity checks can occur). The Schengen 90/180-day short-stay rule does NOT apply to EU citizens exercising free movement; it governs only non-EU visitors. The forthcoming ETIAS travel authorization (launching late 2026) also does NOT apply to EU/Schengen nationals. For stays longer than three months, an Italian may register their residence with the Luxembourg commune, but this is an administrative formality, not a visa.
