Do United Kingdom passport holders need a visa to visit SE?

UK ordinary passport holders can visit Sweden visa-free for up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period for tourism. No visa or travel authorisation is required as of 31 May 2026. ETIAS is not yet live. Sweden is part of the Schengen Area, and the United Kingdom is on the EU's visa-exempt list for short stays. A British citizen holding an ordinary passport may travel to Sweden for tourism, visiting family or friends, business, or short courses without applying for a visa, for a maximum of 90 days within any rolling 180-day period. This 90-day allowance is shared across the entire Schengen Area, not Sweden alone, so any days spent in other Schengen states in the prior 180 days count toward the limit. The passport must have been issued within the last 10 years and remain valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended departure date from Schengen. The EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) began phased rollout from October 2025 and is expected to be fully operational from April 2026; under EES, short-stay visitors register biometrics (fingerprints and a facial photo) at the external border instead of receiving a passport stamp - this is free and the registration is valid for 3 years. The separate ETIAS travel authorisation (a EUR 20 online pre-authorisation) is not yet in force; the European Commission expects ETIAS to start in the last quarter of 2026, with a transitional grace period meaning it will not become mandatory for visa-exempt travellers including UK citizens until roughly 2027. Until then, no advance authorisation is needed. Overstaying the 90/180 limit can lead to fines, removal, and an entry ban of up to 3 years.
