United Kingdom to Sweden visa requirements

UK ordinary passport holders can visit Sweden visa-free for up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period for tourism and other permitted short stays. ETIAS is not yet operational as of 21 June 2026. Sweden is part of the Schengen Area, and British citizens with an ordinary passport remain visa-exempt for short visits. You can travel to Sweden, and to the wider Schengen Area, for tourism, visiting family or friends, business meetings, cultural or sports events, or short-term study/training for up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period without applying for a visa. The 90-day allowance is shared across all Schengen countries, so previous time in any Schengen state counts. Your passport must have been issued less than 10 years before the date you arrive and must be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen Area. At Swedish border control, you may be asked for a return or onward ticket, accommodation details, travel insurance, and proof of enough money; Sweden's published visitor guideline is normally SEK 450 per day. The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) is now fully operational across Schengen and Sweden is already in full operation: UK and other non-EU short-stay travellers may need to provide fingerprints and a facial image at the external border, with no fee and no advance application. ETIAS is separate from EES. It is not possible or required to apply yet; the European Commission says ETIAS is scheduled to start in the last quarter of 2026, with the exact start date to be announced later. Once operational, ETIAS will be an online travel authorisation for visa-exempt travellers, cost EUR 20 for most adults, and be valid for 3 years or until the passport expires.
