Do Germany passport holders need a visa to visit GR?
No. German citizens do not need a visa or any travel authorization to visit Greece. As EU citizens exercising the right of free movement, they may enter Greece with a valid German passport or national ID card and stay indefinitely for tourism. Both Germany and Greece are EU member states and part of the Schengen Area. A German passport holder travels to Greece under the EU right of free movement (Directive 2004/38/EC), not as a third-country visitor. This means no visa, no ETIAS, and no entry/exit registration is ever required. A valid German passport or national identity card is the only document needed, and there are no internal Schengen border checks under normal circumstances. The Schengen 90/180-day short-stay rule and the upcoming ETIAS travel authorization (expected to launch in late 2026) apply ONLY to visa-exempt non-EU nationals (such as US, UK, Canadian, and Australian citizens) — they do NOT apply to EU citizens like Germans. A German may stay in Greece beyond 90 days; if remaining longer than 3 months for residence, work, or study, the only formality is registering with the local authorities to obtain a Registration Certificate for EU citizens. Travel between Germany and Greece is therefore completely visa-free and authorization-free for tourism, business, or any short visit.
