Do Germany passport holders need a visa to visit GR?

No. German citizens do not need a visa or any travel authorization to visit Greece. As EU citizens exercising the right of free movement, they may enter Greece with a valid German passport or national ID card and stay indefinitely for tourism. Both Germany and Greece are EU member states and part of the Schengen Area. A German passport holder travels to Greece under the EU right of free movement (Directive 2004/38/EC), not as a third-country visitor. This means no visa, no ETIAS, and no entry/exit registration is ever required. A valid German passport or national identity card is the only document needed, and there are no internal Schengen border checks under normal circumstances. The Schengen 90/180-day short-stay rule and the upcoming ETIAS travel authorization (expected to launch in late 2026) apply ONLY to visa-exempt non-EU nationals (such as US, UK, Canadian, and Australian citizens) — they do NOT apply to EU citizens like Germans. A German may stay in Greece beyond 90 days; if remaining longer than 3 months for residence, work, or study, the only formality is registering with the local authorities to obtain a Registration Certificate for EU citizens. Travel between Germany and Greece is therefore completely visa-free and authorization-free for tourism, business, or any short visit.

How to apply

/01
Confirm your passport or ID is valid
Ensure your German passport or national identity card (Personalausweis) is valid for the dates of travel. EU citizens may use either document; a passport is not strictly required when both countries are in Schengen.
· Required· Valid on day of travel
/02
Book travel to Greece
Reserve flights, ferries, or other transport. As an EU citizen you face no entry-authorization step — there is nothing to apply for before travel.
· No visa application
/03
Travel within Schengen
Flights from Germany to Greece are internal Schengen routes. You normally pass through without systematic passport checks, though airlines and authorities may still request ID.
· No routine border check
/04
Carry ID throughout your stay
Keep your passport or ID card on you in Greece, as police may request proof of identity. There is no Entry/Exit System (EES) registration for EU citizens.
· Recommended
/05
Register only if staying over 3 months
For tourism or short visits, do nothing. If you settle in Greece beyond 3 months (work, study, residence), apply for a Registration Certificate for EU Citizens at the local police/aliens office.
· Only for long-term stays
