Do Germans need a visa for China in 2026?

No — German ordinary passport holders enter mainland China visa-free for up to 30 days under China's unilateral policy. Extended through 31 December 2026. From 1 January 2027 the policy may be renewed, replaced, or expire.

Up to 30 days per entry for tourism, business, family visits, exchanges, or transit. Multiple entries are allowed but repeated short visits may invite questions about residency intent.

Do I need to register anywhere?

Yes — all foreigners must register their address with the local police within 24 hours of arrival. Hotels handle this automatically; if you stay with friends or in a private rental, visit the local 派出所 (police station).

Can I work on visa-free entry?

No. Visa-free covers tourism, business meetings, conferences, family visits, exchanges, and transit. Paid work requires the Z visa; formal study requires the X visa; journalism the J visa.

Does visa-free cover Hong Kong or Macau?

No — visa-free into mainland China is separate from HK/Macau rules. German passport holders are visa-free in HK (90 days) and Macau (90 days) under separate bilateral arrangements.

What about TikTok and other apps?

TikTok (Douyin), Google, Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, and most foreign social media are blocked in mainland China. Set up a VPN before arrival if you need access.
