South Africa to North Korea visa requirements

South African ordinary passport holders need a visa for North Korea, arranged exclusively through a state-authorized tour operator. Independent travel and self-application are not possible. As of mid-2026, general tourism remains suspended for all non-Russian nationals, so a tourist visa cannot realistically be obtained right now even though no visa-free or eVisa channel exists. A South African (ZA) ordinary passport holder traveling to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK / North Korea) for tourism requires a visa. There is no visa-free entry, no eVisa, no visa-on-arrival and no ETA. The DPRK does not have a resident embassy in South Africa, so the tourist visa is organized in practice by a government-authorized tour operator (e.g. Koryo Tours, Young Pioneer Tours, Uri Tours), who handle the application with the DPRK authorities. The visa is typically issued as a separate paper "tourist card" rather than a passport sticker and is collected before entry, usually in Beijing or Vladivostok. All tourists must travel on a guided, escorted group or private tour; independent travel is prohibited. CRITICAL CURRENT-STATUS CAVEAT: As of mid-2026 North Korea remains effectively closed to general international tourism. Since February 2024 only Russian nationals have had tourist access. A brief reopening of the Rason Special Economic Zone (Feb-early March 2025) to most non-Russian nationalities was suspended on 5 March 2025, and the Wonsan-Kalma coastal zone has not opened to general foreign tourists. Therefore, while the legal pathway for South Africans is a tour-operator-arranged visa, that pathway is not currently available in practice. North Korea is not in the Schengen area, so the 90/180 rule and ETIAS do not apply. Travelers should confirm status with an authorized operator and the South African Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) before making any plans.
