South Africa to China visa requirements

Visa required for ordinary mainland China visits. South African ordinary passport holders are not on China's current 30-day unilateral visa-free list; only narrow 24-hour direct transit or organized regional group exceptions may avoid a visa. South African ordinary passport holders need a Chinese visa before ordinary mainland China trips for tourism, business, family visits, exchanges, study, work, journalism, or non-qualifying transit. China NIA's current unilateral ordinary-passport visa-free list, compiled as of 17 February 2026, does not include South Africa. NIA's mutual visa-exemption table lists South Africa only for diplomatic and service/official passports, not ordinary passports. South Africa is also not among the 55 countries eligible for China's 240-hour visa-free transit policy and is not listed for the 30-day Hainan individual regional policy. The practical visa-free exception for ordinary South African travellers is limited 24-hour direct transit to a third country or region with confirmed onward transport; staying within the restricted port area is visa-free, while leaving it requires a temporary entry permit from border inspection. For regular visas, applicants in South Africa use the China Online Visa Processing System, wait for online review, then submit the passport and required materials through the Chinese Visa Application Service Center in Johannesburg or its Durban/Cape Town offices. CVASC categories include L tourism, M business, F exchange, Q/S family or private matters, G transit, X study, Z work, and J journalism. Hong Kong and Macao remain separate immigration jurisdictions; South African passport holders are generally listed for 30-day visa-free visits to each, but visas for mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macao must be considered separately when combining destinations.

How to apply

/06 — The risks

Common refusal reasons

by frequency
/01
South Africa not on unilateral list
NIA's 17 February 2026 ordinary-passport unilateral visa-free list does not include South Africa, so ordinary mainland visits require a visa.
High
/02
Ordinary passport not covered by mutual exemption
The China-South Africa mutual visa-exemption entry listed by NIA covers diplomatic and service/official passports only.
High
/03
Transit itinerary does not qualify
South Africans are not on the 240-hour transit list. Only 24-hour direct transit to a third country or region may be visa-free, and leaving the port area requires a temporary entry permit.
Medium
/04
Wrong visa category or purpose
Tourism, business, exchange, family, transit, study, work, and journalism use different categories; work, study, and journalism require the correct prior approval documents.
Medium
/05
Passport or materials insufficient
CVASC warns passports with less than 6 months' validity risk refusal; missing invitation, itinerary, photo, or purpose documents can delay or derail the application.
Medium
/06
Accommodation registration missed
Private accommodation must be registered with public security within 24 hours; failure can lead to a warning or a fine up to CNY 2,000.

Use the foreign visitor lanes, keep hotel or invitation details handy, and make sure your entry purpose matches the visa-free category.
/02
Registration
Hotels normally register foreign guests automatically. If staying in a private residence, complete temporary residence registration with local police within 24 hours.
/03
Connectivity
Install maps, translation, and payment apps before travel. Some foreign services may not work reliably without roaming or a compliant VPN.
