🇺🇸UNITED STATES🇿🇦SOUTH AFRICAUS-ZA Do United States passport holders need a visa to visit South Africa?
No visa needed. US ordinary passport holders can enter South Africa visa-free for tourism for up to 90 days. US ordinary passport holders do not need a visa to visit South Africa for tourism or business for stays of 90 days or less. On arrival, immigration grants a visitor's entry permit (visa exemption) of up to 90 days, which is non-extendable for this purpose. Your passport must be valid for at least 30 days beyond your intended departure and contain at least two consecutive blank visa pages (not endorsement pages); travelers have been denied boarding or entry for insufficient blank pages. Although South Africa launched an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system in late 2025 and declared full rollout in April 2026, as of 30 May 2026 the ETA portal applies only to visa-required nationals (initially China, India, Indonesia and Mexico) — visa-exempt US citizens are NOT required to obtain an ETA and continue to enter visa-free. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required only if arriving from or transiting a yellow-fever-risk country. Be prepared to show proof of onward/return travel, accommodation, and sufficient funds.
