United States to Russian Federation visa requirements

US ordinary passport holders must obtain a Russian visa before travel. US citizens are not on Russia's unified e-visa eligibility list and there is no tourist visa-free route. Apply in advance with a visa support document from a registered Russian host, and review the US State Department Level 4 'Do Not Travel' advisory before making any plans. A United States ordinary passport holder cannot enter Russia for tourism without a visa obtained before travel. Russia's official unified e-visa country list is current to 2026 and does not include the United States, so Americans cannot use the Russian e-visa route even though many other nationalities can. For tourism, US citizens use a regular sticker visa issued through a Russian consulate or visa application center. A single- or double-entry tourist visa is normally issued for no more than 30 days, while US citizens can request a 3-year multiple-entry tourist visa; official consular and visa-center guidance states this multiple-entry visa can allow stays of up to 180 days per visit. The tourist visa file requires a visa support document / confirmation of hosting from a Russian hotel or travel agency registered with the Federal Agency of Tourist Operators, an original signed passport valid at least 6 months after the visa expiry date with 2 blank visa pages, the printed online application from visa.kdmid.ru, one passport-style photo, and payment. VFS states US citizens are not required to have health insurance in order to apply for the tourist visa, though travel and medical evacuation insurance remain strongly recommended. Official consular fee pages now list USD 185 for US citizens, and the Russia Visa Application Centre page lists a USD 38 service charge; confirm the amount at booking because visa-center pages may lag consular fee updates. The US State Department advisory for Russia remains Level 4 'Do Not Travel', dated December 29, 2025, citing terrorism, unrest, wrongful detention, limited consular support, and other risks.
