Do United States passport holders need a visa to visit Germany (Schengen)?

Visa-free up to 90 days in any 180. EES live since 10 Apr 2026; ETIAS arrives Q4 2026. U.S. ordinary passport holders enter Germany visa-free for short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period under Schengen rules. The biometric Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully operational since 10 April 2026, replacing passport stamps. ETIAS — a roughly €7 online travel authorization — launches in the fourth quarter of 2026 and becomes mandatory in 2027. Stays beyond 90 days, paid work, or study require a German national long-stay D visa applied for through the relevant German consulate before travel.

/02
Passport too old or expiring
Passport issued more than 10 years before entry, or expiring within 3 months of departure, leads to boarding denial.
