United States to Austria visa requirements

US ordinary passport holders can visit Austria visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the Schengen Area. No visa or pre-travel authorization is required as of 2026-06-19. ETIAS will become mandatory only after its Q4 2026 launch and transition/grace periods, so it is not yet needed today. Austria is a member of the Schengen Area, and United States citizens holding an ordinary passport enjoy visa-free entry for short stays. You may stay up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period for tourism, business visits, or family visits, with no visa application required. This 90-day allowance is shared across the entire Schengen Area, not Austria alone, so days spent in other Schengen countries count toward the same limit. Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your intended departure date from the Schengen Area and have been issued within the previous 10 years. Border officers may ask for proof of onward or return travel, sufficient funds, and accommodation. One current EU border system and one upcoming travel authorization affect this route. The Entry/Exit System (EES) is now in force at external borders of the participating European countries: it became fully operational on 10 April 2026 and replaces passport stamping with electronic entry/exit registration and biometrics (facial image and fingerprints for visa-free travelers); it does not require any application. The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is scheduled to start operations in the last quarter of 2026. Once ETIAS is enforced, visa-exempt travelers including US citizens will need an approved ETIAS authorization before travel; the fee is EUR 20, it is valid for up to 3 years or until passport expiry, and applicants under 18 or over 70 are fee-exempt. ETIAS is not yet operational or required as of 2026-06-19. Its launch will be followed by transitional and grace periods expected to last at least 12 months in total. For trips now, no advance authorization is needed.
