Malaysia to Timor-Leste visa requirements

Malaysian ordinary passport holders can enter Timor-Leste visa-free for up to 30 days for tourism and social visits. This follows a bilateral visa exemption agreement that took effect on 16 August 2025, covering all passport types. No visa, no fee, and no advance application are required at entry. As of 30 May 2026, Malaysia ordinary passport holders do NOT need a visa to visit Timor-Leste (East Timor) for short tourist or social stays. Timor-Leste and Malaysia signed a visa exemption agreement that was ratified unanimously by Timor-Leste's National Parliament on 24 June 2025 and entered into force on 16 August 2025. The waiver applies to all passport categories, including ordinary passports, and grants up to 30 days of visa-free stay per visit. This change is part of Timor-Leste's broader push to align its visa policy with ASEAN member states ahead of its accession to the bloc; Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, and Laos already enjoy similar 30-day waivers. Before August 2025, Malaysians had to obtain a USD 30 visa on arrival at Dili airport, so this is a recent and material improvement. Travelers still need a passport valid for at least six months from the date of arrival with at least two blank pages, proof of onward/return travel, accommodation details, and sufficient funds. All arriving passengers must also complete the online Timor-Leste e-Declaration (arrival) form before travel. If you intend to stay longer than 30 days, or travel for work, study, or other non-tourist purposes, a formal visa is still required. Given conflicting older online listings that still mention visa-on-arrival, carry printed evidence of the visa-waiver and your supporting documents, and confirm with the Timor-Leste Immigration Service or the Malaysian Embassy in Dili shortly before departure.
