Japan to Malawi visa requirements

Japanese passport holders need a visa for Malawi. Apply online for the tourist eVisa before you travel via the official portal evisa.gov.mw. Japan is not on Malawi's visa-exemption list, so Japanese ordinary passport holders must obtain a visa for tourism. The recommended route is the official Malawi eVisa, applied for online before departure at evisa.gov.mw and operated by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services. A single-entry tourist visa costs USD 75, permits a stay of up to 30 days per entry, and the e-authorization is valid for 90 days from issue for a single entry. Visa on arrival also remains available to many nationalities at designated ports, but pre-applying for the eVisa is strongly advised to avoid delays. Note that Malawi reversed much of its 2024 visa-free liberalization on 3 January 2026, returning to a reciprocity-based regime; this reinforces that Japanese travelers should secure an eVisa in advance. Malawi is in southern Africa and has no connection to the Schengen area or ETIAS.
