Q: What is the 90/180 rule?

You can spend up to 90 days total in the Schengen Area in any rolling 180-day window. Days in Spain, France, Italy, Germany, and other Schengen countries all count together.

Q: Is ETIAS required now?

No. As of 20 June 2026, ETIAS is not operational and applications are not collected. The European Commission says ETIAS starts in the last quarter of 2026.

Q: What funds can Spain ask for?

Spain's 2026 minimum is EUR 122 per person per day. For stays of 9 days or more, carry proof of at least EUR 1,099 or the equivalent.

Q: Can I work in Spain visa-free?

No paid local work or residence is allowed on visa-free short-stay entry. Use the appropriate Spanish national visa or residence authorization for work, long study, residence, or digital-nomad/telework plans.

Q: Can I stay longer than 90 days?

Not under the Schengen visa waiver. Stays over 90 days require the appropriate Spanish national visa or residence authorization.

Q: Will my passport be stamped?

EES is fully operational and records entries and exits electronically. Border authorities may still handle documents, but the control record is electronic.

No visa required for short stays: Japanese ordinary passport holders can visit Spain and the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. EES is fully operational; ETIAS starts in Q4 2026 and is not required yet. As of 20 June 2026, holders of an ordinary Japanese passport do not need a Schengen visa for Spain for short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The allowance is shared across all Schengen countries, not reset per country. Spain may ask visa-free travellers to show a passport issued within the last 10 years and valid at least 3 months after planned Schengen departure, a return or onward ticket, accommodation or invitation evidence, purpose of stay, and sufficient funds. Spain's 2026 funds threshold is EUR 122 per person per day, with at least EUR 1,099 for stays of 9 days or more. EES became fully operational on 10 April 2026, so entries, exits, refusals, facial image, fingerprints, and travel-document data are recorded electronically instead of relying on passport stamps. ETIAS is currently not in operation; the European Commission says it starts in the last quarter of 2026 and the fee is EUR 20 once operational. Visa-free entry does not authorize paid local work or residence. Stays over 90 days, employment, long study, residence, and Spain's international telework/digital-nomad route require the appropriate Spanish national visa or residence authorization.

Count every day spent in any Schengen country during the previous 180 days. Spain can refuse entry if the shared 90-day Schengen allowance has already been exhausted.
