As of 2026, Japanese ordinary passport holders should apply for Afghanistan's new online tourist e-Visa (launched March 2026), which grants a single entry, 30-day stay, and is currently usable only when arriving at Kabul International Airport. An in-person/postal embassy visa from the Afghan Embassy in Tokyo remains an alternative. Afghanistan requires a visa from essentially all foreign nationals, including Japanese citizens; there is no visa-free or general visa-on-arrival channel for tourists. In March 2026 Afghanistan launched an online e-Visa system (the "E-Afghans" portal) that issues a single-entry tourist e-Visa valid for a stay of up to 30 days, with the e-Visa expiring 90 days from the date of issue.
