🇫🇷FRANCE🇮🇹ITALY (SCHENGEN)FR-IT Do France passport holders need a visa to visit Italy (Schengen)?
No visa needed. As an EU citizen, a French passport holder enjoys freedom of movement and can enter Italy for tourism with just a valid passport or national ID card. France and Italy are both EU member states within the Schengen Area, so a French ordinary passport holder travels to Italy under EU freedom-of-movement rules rather than as a visitor needing a visa. You may enter and stay for tourism using either a valid French passport or a valid French national identity card. There is no visa, no ETIAS, and no Entry/Exit System (EES) registration for EU citizens. Because both countries are in Schengen, there are normally no systematic border checks at the France-Italy crossing, though authorities may reintroduce temporary controls in exceptional circumstances and can always ask you to prove your identity, so carry your travel document. The Schengen 90/180-day rule does NOT apply to EU citizens; instead, EU law allows you to stay in another member state for up to 3 months freely, and longer if you register as a resident. ETIAS and EES are systems for visa-exempt non-EU nationals and do not affect French citizens at any point.
