Do France passport holders need a visa to visit AT?
No. A French ordinary passport holder needs no visa to visit Austria. As an EU citizen you have full freedom of movement and may enter, stay, work, and study in Austria indefinitely. Just carry a valid French passport or national ID card. France and Austria are both members of the European Union and the Schengen Area. Under EU freedom-of-movement rules, French citizens travel to Austria visa-free using either a valid French passport or a valid national identity card. There is no visa, no ETIAS requirement, and no 90-day Schengen short-stay limit applied to EU citizens. The Schengen 90/180 rule applies only to non-EU visa-exempt visitors, not to EU nationals. A French citizen may stay in Austria beyond three months for any purpose (tourism, work, study, residence); for stays over three months, EU rules require only a simple registration with the local Austrian authority (Anmeldebescheinigung), not a visa or residence permit. ETIAS, launching in late 2026 for non-EU visa-exempt travelers, does not apply to EU citizens. Internal Schengen border checks are normally absent, though Austria has at times reintroduced temporary controls (e.g. with neighboring states), so travelers should always carry a valid travel document.
