Do Germany passport holders need a visa to visit IQ?

German ordinary passport holders need an eVisa to visit federal Iraq. Since 1 March 2025 Iraq suspended visa-on-arrival for Germany and 36 other nationalities, so you must apply online at the official portal (evisa.iq) before you fly. It grants a single entry and a 30-day stay. The autonomous Kurdistan Region issues its own separate permit. A Germany (DE) ordinary passport holder traveling to Iraq for tourism requires an electronic visa (eVisa) obtained before departure. Until early 2025, Germans could get a visa on arrival at Baghdad and other federal Iraqi airports, but effective 1 March 2025 Iraq's authorities suspended visa-on-arrival for 37 nationalities including Germany, channeling them to the official online eVisa system run by the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs (evisa.iq). The tourist eVisa is single-entry, allows a stay of 30 days, and is typically issued within 1-3 business days (the system advertises 6-72 hours). The passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry. Fees vary by source: the official Iraqi government tourist visa fee is modest (around US$30-80 depending on category and service charges), while many travelers report total costs near US$160 when government, service and processing charges are combined or when using authorized agencies. Iraq is not in the Schengen area, so the Schengen 90/180 rule and ETIAS do not apply. Important distinction: the federal Iraq eVisa is valid for the whole country including the Kurdistan Region, but the Kurdistan Regional Government also operates its own separate entry system (visit.gov.krd) for travelers arriving directly into Erbil or Sulaymaniyah; a Kurdistan-only permit is NOT valid for travel into federal Iraq. Given persistent security advisories, German travelers should also consult the German Federal Foreign Office (Auswaertiges Amt) travel guidance before booking.
