Do Germany passport holders need a visa to visit IE?
German passport holders do not need a visa to enter Ireland. As EU citizens with freedom-of-movement rights, they may travel, visit, work, and reside in Ireland indefinitely. A valid passport or German national ID card is sufficient. Ireland is not in the Schengen Area and does not operate ETIAS or the EU Entry/Exit System, so no travel authorisation is required. Germany and Ireland are both EU member states, so German citizens enjoy full freedom of movement to Ireland under EU law. No visa, no pre-travel authorisation, and no fee apply for any length of stay, whether for tourism, business, study, work, or residence. Travel requires only a valid passport or a German national identity card; both are accepted by Irish immigration. Because Ireland opted out of the Schengen Area, manual document checks still take place at the border even though no visa is needed, so travellers should always carry their passport or ID card rather than relying on Schengen-style open borders. Crucially, Ireland is NOT participating in either the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) or ETIAS, both of which apply only to non-EU nationals visiting Schengen/EU states; even when those systems launch, German citizens are exempt as EU nationals and Ireland is outside their scope entirely. The Schengen 90/180 short-stay rule does not apply, as that rule governs non-EU visitors to the Schengen zone, which Ireland is not part of and German citizens are not subject to. There is no time limit on a German citizen's stay in Ireland; the right of residence beyond three months simply requires being employed, self-employed, studying, or self-sufficient, in line with EU free-movement directives. This arrangement is stable and well-established, with no announced changes for 2026.
