Germany to Bulgaria visa requirements

No visa. German citizens travel to Bulgaria visa-free with full freedom of movement as both are EU member states. You may enter and stay indefinitely with a valid German passport or national ID card; no 90/180 limit and no ETIAS apply. Germany and Bulgaria are both European Union member states, so German nationals enjoy the EU right of free movement when traveling to Bulgaria. No visa, ETIAS, or entry permit is required for tourism, business, or any short visit. Travel is permitted on either a valid German passport or a German national identity card. Bulgaria also became a full member of the Schengen Area on 1 January 2025 (air and sea borders opened 31 March 2024, land borders 1 January 2025), so there are no longer routine border-control checks when entering Bulgaria from another Schengen state. Because EU freedom of movement governs this trip, the Schengen 90/180-day short-stay rule and the upcoming ETIAS travel authorisation do NOT apply to German citizens; those rules only affect visa-exempt non-EU nationals. A German tourist can stay up to 90 days with no formalities; for stays longer than 90 days, EU citizens simply register with local authorities to obtain a residence/registration certificate rather than applying for a visa. Carry a passport or ID card valid for the duration of your stay; authorities retain the right to verify identity even inside the Schengen zone.
