Do Canada passport holders need a visa to visit NL?
Canadian ordinary passport holders do NOT need a visa to visit the Netherlands for tourism — they can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the Schengen area. ETIAS is not yet required (expected Q4 2026); for now, a valid passport is sufficient. The Netherlands is part of the 29-country Schengen area. Canadian citizens are visa-exempt for short stays, meaning a Canadian ordinary passport holder can enter the Netherlands for tourism, business, or family visits without a visa for up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period (the 90/180 rule, cumulative across ALL Schengen countries). The passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond the planned departure date from Schengen and issued within the last 10 years. Since October 2025, the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) registers non-EU travelers with facial images and fingerprints at the border. The ETIAS travel authorization (a roughly €20 online pre-screening, not a visa) is expected to launch in the last quarter of 2026 with a transition period; as of 30 May 2026 it is NOT yet required, so no online application or fee applies today. Travelers should still carry proof of onward/return travel, sufficient funds, and accommodation details.
