Do Canada passport holders need a visa to visit HU?

Canadian ordinary passport holders do NOT need a visa for tourism in Hungary. As a Schengen member, Hungary admits Canadians visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. ETIAS is not yet operational (planned for Q4 2026), so no advance authorization is required as of May 2026 — just a valid passport. Hungary is a full member of the Schengen Area, and Canada is on the EU's Annex II list of visa-exempt nationalities. Canadian citizens holding an ordinary passport can therefore enter Hungary (and the wider Schengen Area) without a visa for short stays of up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period, for tourism, business, family visits or transit. The 90/180 limit is cumulative across ALL Schengen states, not per country. As of 31 May 2026, no electronic travel authorization is yet required: the EU's ETIAS system is officially scheduled to begin operation in the last quarter of 2026, and until it goes live a valid passport alone is sufficient. When ETIAS launches, Canadians will need to obtain a EUR 7 authorization online before travel (free for applicants under 18 or 70+), valid for 3 years or until the passport expires. The Entry/Exit System (EES), a biometric border-registration scheme, began phased rollout in October 2025 and records entries/exits automatically. Passports must be valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended departure date from the Schengen Area and have been issued within the previous 10 years. Travelers may be asked at the border to show proof of accommodation, sufficient funds, return/onward tickets, and travel insurance.
