Do Australia passport holders need a visa to visit MG?
Australian passport holders need a visa for Madagascar, but it is easy to obtain. You can apply online for an eVisa via the official portal (evisamada-mg.com) before you travel, or get a visa on arrival at Ivato International Airport (Antananarivo) and other entry points. Both routes are valid for tourism; the eVisa is recommended to avoid airport queues. A short tourist trip to Madagascar requires a visa for Australian citizens; it is not visa-free. Madagascar offers a single-entry tourist visa through two channels: an electronic visa (eVisa) applied for in advance on the official government portal evisamada-mg.com, and a traditional visa on arrival stamped at international airports such as Ivato (Antananarivo). For stays of 15 days or less there is no visa fee, but every traveler pays a EUR 10 tourist/administration fee at border control. From 16 February 2026 the 15-day eVisa fee was raised to EUR 30 (USD 35); the 30-day visa costs EUR 35 and the 60-day visa EUR 40. The maximum single-entry tourist stay is 60 days (some channels offer up to 90). The eVisa is issued within 72 hours of validation. Requirements include a passport valid at least 6 months with a blank page, proof of onward/return travel, and a yellow fever vaccination certificate if arriving from an endemic country. Madagascar is not in the Schengen area, so the Schengen 90/180 rule and ETIAS do not apply. We classify this as eVisa because the recommended pre-arrival route is the official online eVisa, though visa on arrival remains available.
