South African ordinary passport holders do NOT need a visa for tourist visits to Russia. Under a bilateral visa-waiver agreement, you may stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period. The new RuID electronic travel authorization (QR code) is currently voluntary for visa-free travelers during an experimental phase. South Africa and Russia have a bilateral visa-exemption agreement (signed 30 March 2017) covering ordinary, diplomatic and service passports. South African ordinary passport holders can enter Russia visa-free for tourism, transit, or visiting family/friends for up to 90 days within each 180-day period, counted from the date of first entry. No visa, invitation letter, or pre-paid hotel booking is required for the visa-free entry itself. Since 30 June 2025 Russia introduced a unified electronic entry system (RuID app generating a personalized QR code, requested at least 72 hours before arrival), but the Russian Ministry of Digital Development clarified the scheme is voluntary/experimental for visa-free travelers through 31 December 2027, so it is not a binding entry blocker at present. Travelers should still carry a passport valid at least 6 months beyond departure, proof of onward/return travel, and ideally travel medical insurance. The visa-free channel does not permit paid work or study; longer stays or those purposes require a consular visa. South Africans are NOT on Russia's 64-country unified e-visa list, but they do not need it because the visa-waiver supersedes it.
