South African ordinary passport holders need a Visitor Visa to enter New Zealand for tourism. South Africa is NOT a visa-waiver country, so the NZeTA is not an option. South Africa lost its New Zealand visa-waiver status on 21 November 2016, when New Zealand reinstated visa requirements for all South African nationals. As a result, ordinary South African passport holders cannot use the New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA), which is reserved for citizens of visa-waiver countries. To visit New Zealand for tourism or a short family visit, South Africans must apply for and be granted a Visitor Visa in advance. The application is made online through Immigration New Zealand, with biometrics and document handling provided by the VFS Global Visa Application Centre (VAC) in Pretoria. The standard online application fee is around NZD 211, plus a mandatory International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) of NZD 100, and a separate VAC service fee. Processing typically takes around 20 working days, so applying 1-2 months ahead is advisable. A Visitor Visa generally permits stays of up to 9 months, with the exact conditions (single or multiple entry, length of stay) set on the visa label by the immigration officer. The passport must be valid for at least three months beyond the intended departure date, and applicants must show onward travel and sufficient funds. New Zealand is not in the Schengen area, so Schengen 90/180 rules and ETIAS do not apply.
