South African ordinary passport holders need a Schengen short-stay (type C) visa to visit Croatia for tourism. Croatia has been a full Schengen member since 1 January 2023, and South Africa is on the EU visa-required list, so the visa must be obtained before travel through the Croatian Embassy or a VFS Global centre. ETIAS does not apply to South Africans. Croatia became a full member of the Schengen Area on 1 January 2023, so it issues uniform Schengen visas valid across all 29 Schengen states. South Africa appears on EU Annex I (the visa-required list), confirmed by the Croatian Ministry of Foreign Affairs visa-requirements overview, which marks ordinary South African passports as needing a visa. Travellers must apply for a type C short-stay Schengen visa before departure, allowing a maximum stay of 90 days within any rolling 180-day period across the whole Schengen Area. Applications are lodged in person at the Croatian Embassy in Pretoria or at VFS Global Visa Application Centres in Pretoria, Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town, with biometrics (fingerprints and photo) captured for first-time or expired-biometric applicants. The standard Schengen visa fee is EUR 90 for adults (EUR 45 for children aged 6-11; free under 6), payable in addition to a VFS service fee. Required supporting documents include a passport issued within the last 10 years and valid at least 3 months beyond the intended departure with two blank pages, confirmed round-trip flights, accommodation proof, bank statements, and travel medical insurance with minimum EUR 30,000 coverage valid across Schengen. Applications should be submitted at least 15 calendar days before travel and may be lodged up to 6 months in advance; standard processing is around 15 calendar days but can extend to 30-45 days in busy periods. Important: ETIAS does NOT apply to South Africans because it is a pre-travel authorisation for visa-exempt nationalities only, and South Africa is not visa-exempt; South Africans continue to need a full Schengen visa.
