Yes. South African ordinary passport holders need a visa to visit Bulgaria. Bulgaria became a full Schengen member on 1 January 2025 and issues uniform (Schengen) Type C short-stay visas. You must apply in advance, in person, at a VFS Global Visa Application Centre in South Africa. ETIAS does not apply to South Africans, as South Africa is not on the EU visa-exempt list. A South African ordinary passport holder must obtain a Schengen short-stay (Type C) visa before traveling to Bulgaria for tourism. Bulgaria joined the Schengen area in full on 1 January 2025 (air and land border checks lifted), and since 31 March 2024 it has issued uniform Schengen visas valid across all 29 Schengen states. The visa permits a maximum stay of 90 days in any 180-day period across the whole Schengen zone. Applications are lodged in person (with biometrics) at a VFS Global centre in Pretoria, Johannesburg, Cape Town or Durban, by appointment, and may be submitted up to 3 months (some channels say 6 months) before travel. The standard consular fee is EUR 80, rising to EUR 90 from 11 June 2026, plus a VFS Global service fee. Required documents include a passport valid 3+ months beyond departure with 2 blank pages, travel medical insurance of at least EUR 30,000, confirmed accommodation and return travel, and proof of sufficient funds (around USD 50 per day). ETIAS, launching in late 2026, applies only to visa-exempt nationalities and does NOT cover South Africans, who must continue to hold a full Schengen visa. Default verdict is visa-required; no visa-free, eVisa or visa-on-arrival channel exists for this passport.
