South African ordinary passport holders need a visa to enter Bosnia and Herzegovina for tourism. Apply for a short-stay Type C visa at the Bosnian Embassy in Pretoria before you travel. One exception: if you already hold a valid multiple-entry Schengen, EU, or US visa or residence permit, you may enter visa-free for up to 30 days. Bosnia and Herzegovina requires South African ordinary passport holders to obtain a visa before arrival. There is no visa-on-arrival or eVisa scheme for South Africans, so application must be made in advance at the Embassy of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Pretoria (or the nearest competent mission). The relevant document for tourism is the short-stay Type C visa, permitting a maximum stay of 90 days within any 180-day period. Bosnia and Herzegovina is NOT in the Schengen Area and is not an EU member, but it operates a visa policy aligned with Schengen and uses the same 90/180 counting rule; ETIAS does not apply. A significant exemption exists: travellers holding a valid multiple-entry Schengen visa, an EU/Schengen member-state residence permit, or a valid US visa/Green Card may enter Bosnia and Herzegovina without a separate Bosnian visa for up to 30 days. South African travellers who do not hold one of those documents must apply for the Type C visa. Typical Type C fees fall in the range of EUR 35-60 (consular fees may be quoted in convertible marks/KM), processing usually 7-15 business days, and applicants should carry travel medical insurance, confirmed accommodation, return ticket and proof of funds.
