US ordinary passport holders get a 30-day tourist visa on arrival (USD $30) when flying into Dili's Presidente Nicolau Lobato International Airport. An optional e-visa can be obtained in advance. Land border crossings from Indonesia require a Visa Application Authorization arranged before travel. A United States ordinary passport holder traveling to Timor-Leste for tourism does NOT need a visa arranged in advance when arriving by air. A single-entry tourist visa on arrival is granted at Presidente Nicolau Lobato International Airport (Dili) for USD $30, valid for a 30-day stay. The passport must be valid for at least six months beyond arrival, and travelers must show a return/onward ticket and sufficient funds (commonly cited as USD $150 per day of stay). The visa can be extended once for another 30 days for USD $40, with the extension request submitted at least 15 days before expiry at the Ministry of Interior in Dili. Note an important exception: visa on arrival is NOT available at the land border with Indonesia. Travelers entering by land must obtain a Visa Application Authorization in advance (typically via the Timor-Leste Consulate in Kupang, Indonesia) and allow processing time. Timor-Leste also offers an e-visa ("do it before you go") option for eligible nationalities including US citizens; it is single-entry, permits a 30-day stay, and is valid for 90 days from issuance. For a standard short tourist visit by air, visa on arrival is the simplest and recommended channel. Timor-Leste is not part of the Schengen area, so Schengen/ETIAS rules do not apply.
