US ordinary passport holders do NOT need a visa for short tourist visits to Slovakia. As a Schengen member, Slovakia allows US citizens visa-free stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. No visa or ETIAS travel authorization is required as of 2026-06-21; ETIAS is expected to start in the last quarter of 2026. Slovakia is a member of the European Union and the Schengen Area. United States ordinary passport holders enjoy visa-free entry for short stays (tourism, business, transit, family visits) for up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period across the entire Schengen zone. No visa needs to be obtained in advance. The passport must be valid for at least three months beyond the intended departure date from the Schengen Area and generally issued within the previous 10 years. Travelers should be prepared to show proof of onward/return travel, sufficient funds, accommodation, and travel medical insurance if asked at the border. The Entry/Exit System (EES), the EU biometric border-registration system for non-EU short-stay travelers, became fully operational across Schengen on 10 April 2026 and replaces passport stamping with digital records including facial images, fingerprints, and travel-document data. ETIAS, an online travel authorization for visa-exempt nationals, is expected to start in the last quarter of 2026; it will cost EUR 20 for most applicants aged 18-70 and will usually be valid up to 3 years or until passport expiry. As of 2026-06-21, ETIAS is NOT yet in operation, so US citizens currently travel with only a valid passport and supporting documents. Once ETIAS launches there will be a transitional grace period during which travelers are not refused entry solely for lacking it. Overstaying the 90/180 limit can result in fines, deportation, and entry bans.
