US ordinary passport holders do NOT need a visa for short tourist trips to Mozambique. Since the June 2023 visa-exemption program, US citizens may enter visa-free for up to 30 days (extendable once to 60 days), paying only a small processing fee on arrival. Mozambique grants visa-free entry to US ordinary passport holders for tourism under the visa-exemption program launched 12 June 2023, which covers 29 countries (US, UK, EU states, Canada, China, Russia, UAE and others). The exemption allows a 30-day stay, renewable once for an additional 30 days upon justification, subject to an overall limit of 90 days (consecutive or interrupted) within any 12-month period. A small migration processing fee of MZN 650 is collected at the border. At entry, travelers must show a passport valid at least 6 months with two blank pages, a confirmed return/onward ticket, proof of accommodation, and sufficient funds. Mozambique built an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) and eVisa system (relaunched on a VFS Global platform at evisa.gov.mz in February 2026), but as of mid-2026 the ETA requirement for visa-exempt nationals has not been consistently enforced and the US Embassy confirms US citizens are not required to obtain a visa. The eVisa (about MZN 6,250 for 30 days) remains an optional route, and a separate traditional embassy tourist visa (about USD 220) exists for those who prefer to pre-arrange. Because Mozambique is not in the Schengen area, the 90/180 Schengen rule and ETIAS do not apply.
