US passport holders need a visa for Madagascar. The simplest route is the official eVisa (electronic travel authorization) for short tourist stays, applied for online before travel; visa on arrival is also available but slower and less reliable. A US ordinary passport holder cannot enter Madagascar visa-free for tourism. Madagascar requires a tourist visa for all nationalities, but it is easy to obtain. The recommended channel is the official eVisa portal (evisamada-mg.com), where you apply online between 7 days and 6 months before departure and receive an electronic travel authorization, typically within 72 hours. The tourist eVisa is single-entry with a maximum stay of 60 days, sold in three tiers: up to 15 days, 16-30 days, and 31-60 days. As of February 16, 2026, the 15-day short-stay fee increased to EUR 30 (about USD 35), from the previous EUR 10. A visa on arrival at Antananarivo (Ivato) and other ports of entry remains available for all nationalities for stays under 60 days, but it involves airport queues and is generally less reliable than the eVisa. Passports must have at least six months validity beyond arrival and three blank pages. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required only if you have transited or stayed in a yellow fever risk country within the prior six months. The US State Department classifies Madagascar entry as visa required and confirms tourist visas are valid for short stays. Conservatively, the verdict is eVisa: a visa is mandatory, with the eVisa being the fastest pre-arrival option.
