As of 2026-06-21, United States ordinary passport holders can travel to Iceland for tourism or business without a visa for short stays of up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period across the whole Schengen area. The Icelandic Directorate of Immigration's United States result says U.S. travelers are exempt from the visa requirement; Iceland's entry rules require non-EEA/EFTA visitors to have a travel document issued within the last 10 years and valid at least 3 months beyond the intended departure date. The U.S. State Department also says U.S. travelers should have 3 months' passport validity beyond departure from Iceland/the Schengen Area, recommends 6 months, lists two blank pages, and notes that proof of funds plus an onward or return ticket may be requested. The Entry/Exit System (EES) is fully operational across Schengen since 10 April 2026, replacing routine passport stamps with digital entry/exit records and collecting facial image, fingerprints, and travel-document data for non-EU short-stay travelers. ETIAS is not in operation and no applications are collected as of 2026-06-21; the European Commission expects ETIAS to start in the last quarter of 2026 with a EUR 20 fee for fee-paying applicants. Once ETIAS is operational and applicable transition rules phase in, visa-exempt U.S. travelers will need an approved ETIAS linked to their passport before travel. For stays beyond the Schengen 90/180 allowance, work, study, or residence, use the correct Icelandic residence-permit route; the United States is not listed in Iceland's bilateral extended-stay countries.
